Super Eagles Blow Lead as Jordan Force Dramatic 2-2 Draw
The Super Eagles of Nigeria surrendered a promising lead to settle for a 2-2 draw against Jordan in an international friendly played in Turkey on Tuesday, March 31, in what turned out to be a dramatic and entertaining encounter.
Jordan drew first blood in the 17th minute, catching Nigeria off guard and momentarily putting the Eagles on the back foot. However, the response from the Nigerian side was swift and purposeful. Moses Simon restored parity in the 26th minute, reacting quickest inside the box to convert from close range after Ademola Lookman’s initial effort was blocked.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Nigeria grew in confidence and took control of proceedings. The comeback was completed before halftime when debutant Emmanuel Fernandez announced himself in style, calmly finishing with his left foot after expertly bringing down a cross from Bright Osayi-Samuel. The goal capped an impressive first-half display that saw the Super Eagles dictate the tempo and look firmly in command.
The second half, however, told a different story. Nigeria suffered a setback when goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was forced off due to injury after a clearance, leading to the introduction of Adebayo Adeleye. The disruption appeared to affect the team’s rhythm as Jordan gradually found their way back into the contest.
Head coach Eric Chelle responded with tactical changes, bringing on experienced midfielders Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi to stabilise the game and preserve Nigeria’s advantage. Despite these adjustments, Jordan continued to press and were eventually rewarded in the 77th minute with a late equaliser that stunned the Nigerian side.
Further substitutions saw Phillip Otele earn his debut, while Samuel Chukwueze was also introduced as Nigeria pushed for a late winner. The Super Eagles mounted pressure in the closing stages, but Jordan held firm to ensure the match ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
While Nigeria will take positives from their attacking display and the emergence of new talents like Fernandez, the inability to hold onto their lead will raise concerns. The result brings an end to the March international window, in which the Super Eagles recorded a win against Iran and a draw against Jordan—leaving fans with a mix of optimism and questions ahead of future fixtures.
