FEMI OGUNLANA AT ANOTHER MILESTONE: CELEBRATING A CEREBRAL MIND, EDUCATOR AND BUILDER OF LIVES
Today, we celebrate a remarkable man, Femi Ogunlana, a school principal, polymath, thinker, communicator and an exceptionally cerebral fellow whose influence has stretched far beyond the walls of the classroom.
A birthday is more than a celebration of age. It is an opportunity to take stock of a life, to measure not merely the years that have passed, but the lives touched, minds awakened, opportunities created and communities positively influenced. By this measure, Femi Ogunlana has much to celebrate.
As a school principal, he belongs to that noble class of educators who understand that education is not simply about passing examinations. It is about building character, unlocking potential and preparing human beings to become useful to society. His intellectual depth, curiosity and versatility have made him more than an administrator of a school; he is a cultivator of minds.
His polymathic disposition is particularly remarkable. In an age when many people specialise narrowly, Ogunlana has demonstrated an uncommon ability to engage with education, intellectual discourse, journalism, social issues and community development. His talent has found expression in several fields, and perhaps more importantly, he has used that talent in the service of others.
There is a profound lesson in such a life.
Nelson Mandela, reflecting on the transformative power of education, famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
That philosophy resonates strongly with Ogunlana’s journey. Every student whose confidence he has strengthened, every young person whose intellectual horizon he has expanded, every colleague he has encouraged and every life he has influenced represents a small but meaningful contribution to a better society.
But Ogunlana’s contribution does not end with education.
His interest and influence in journalism in Ogbomoso and Oyo State have also placed him within an important tradition of people who understand that society cannot progress without informed minds and responsible communication. Journalism, at its best, is a public trust: it informs, interrogates, educates and gives society the opportunity to reflect on itself.
That Ogunlana has been able to operate meaningfully around both education and journalism speaks to the breadth of his intellectual interests and his willingness to deploy his gifts beyond personal advancement.
The lives of some of humanity’s most consequential men demonstrate this same principle.
Andrew Carnegie, whose philanthropy supported education, libraries and knowledge, believed that individuals had a responsibility to use what they possessed for the improvement of society. Historical accounts of his philanthropy describe his emphasis on education and on using resources to create opportunities rather than merely dependency.
Mahatma Gandhi, writing about education, argued that true education involves drawing out the best in oneself and developing not only the intellect but also the heart and character.
And Marcus Garvey, reflecting on education, connected learning with understanding one’s fellow human beings and one’s relationship with the Creator.
These great thinkers, despite the differences in their historical circumstances and philosophies, remind us of one enduring truth: a gift becomes truly valuable when it is converted into service.
This is why Femi Ogunlana deserves to be celebrated not simply because another year has been added to his life, but because of what he has continued to add to the lives of others.
There are people who acquire knowledge merely to distinguish themselves from others. There are also those who acquire knowledge and turn it into a lamp for others. Ogunlana belongs to the latter tradition.
His cerebral capacity is not merely an ornament. His influence is not merely a title. His talent is not merely a personal possession. He has continued to deploy them as instruments of transformation.
In Ogbomoso and across Oyo State, where intellectual capital, quality education and responsible journalism remain vital to social development, men like Ogunlana represent an important bridge between knowledge and impact.
The Bible puts the principle beautifully:
“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another.” — 1 Peter 4:10.
That scripture captures the essence of a life of useful talent. God gives different people different abilities; the responsibility is to ensure that those abilities become blessings to others.
And perhaps this is the most fitting way to describe Femi Ogunlana: a man who has not kept his gifts to himself.
On this special birthday, therefore, we celebrate the educator, the intellectual, the polymath, the communicator, the journalist at heart, the mentor and, above all, the man whose influence has helped to make other people better.
May the Almighty God continue to enlarge his intellectual capacity, strengthen his body and spirit, bless his family, reward his labour, and open new chapters of greater relevance and fulfilment before him.
May the years ahead bring him greater opportunities to educate, inspire, mentor, communicate and transform lives.
For, ultimately, the greatest testimony of a man’s life is not how much he knows, how many positions he occupies or how widely his name is known.
It is how many lives became better because he passed through them.
Happy Birthday, Femi Ogunlana.
May your new age mark the beginning of another remarkable chapter in a life of knowledge, influence, service and humanity.
