What should have been an ordinary league fixture in Ilorin exploded into controversy on Wednesday as violence erupted moments after the final whistle in the Gameweek 22 clash between Kwara United F.C. and Rivers United F.C..
The encounter ended 1-1, but the real drama unfolded off the pitch. Tension boiled over inside the stadium as unruly elements stormed restricted areas, allegedly attacking top league official Chief Okey Kpalukwu, Chairman of Chairmen in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Eyewitness accounts described scenes of panic as security personnel struggled to contain the situation, with officials and members of the visiting delegation hurriedly escorted to safety. What began as frustration over the match result quickly spiraled into a chaotic spectacle that overshadowed the football itself.
In a strongly worded statement issued late Wednesday, Kwara United condemned the violence, distancing the club from what it described as the actions of “irrational elements.” The Ilorin-based side offered an unreserved apology to Chief Kpalukwu, the Rivers United delegation, match officials, security operatives, and supporters affected by the incident.
The club vowed to cooperate fully with authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible, warning that decisive steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence. It also announced plans to intensify fan re-orientation and sensitization programmes aimed at restoring discipline and protecting the integrity of the league.
The incident now casts a dark cloud over the NPFL season, raising fresh concerns about crowd control, stadium security, and the growing tension surrounding high-stakes domestic fixtures.
What was meant to be a routine draw has instead ignited a national conversation — and possibly disciplinary consequences — for one of Nigeria’s top-flight clubs.
