American Open University Concludes Two-Day AI Training for 120 Oyo Journalists
American Open University (AOU) has successfully concluded a two-day capacity-building training for 120 journalists in Oyo State, aimed at equipping media professionals with cutting-edge skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The training, organised for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, was held under the theme “Empowering Journalists with AI for Ethical, Innovative and Future-Ready Journalism.” It focused on emerging technologies and how AI can enhance newsroom efficiency, accuracy, and innovation, while positioning journalists as agents of sustainability and fiscal integrity in society.
Participants were exposed to practical insights on transitioning from analogue practices to digital-driven journalism, with emphasis on responsible and ethical use of AI tools in news gathering, production, and dissemination.
Delivering the keynote sessions, the Founder of American Open University, Professor Seyi Akanbi—a Professor of Emerging Technologies—provided an in-depth exploration of Artificial Intelligence and its growing influence on modern media practice. Using vivid analogies and real-world examples, Professor Akanbi explained how AI can empower journalists, improve productivity, and expand storytelling possibilities.
He also highlighted the inherent risks associated with AI in journalism, including misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda. According to him, these threats can be effectively curtailed through the use of appropriate AI detection tools, verification techniques, and strict adherence to professional ethics.
Earlier, while declaring the training open, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, expressed delight at the initiative. He commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oyo State, led by Akeem Babatunde, for partnering with American Open University to deliver what he described as a timely and impactful educational programme.
Prince Oyelade noted that the training would significantly strengthen the capacity of journalists in the state to operate effectively in the fast-evolving digital media environment, while upholding ethical standards and public trust.
The programme was widely applauded by participants, who described it as a critical step towards preparing Oyo State journalists for the demands of future-ready journalism in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
