18th Convocation Lecture: Bank of Industry Boss Rates LAUTECH Highly in Technology Breakthroughs
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Bank of Industry, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, has praised Ladoke Akintola University of Technology for its strong research output and solution-driven innovations, describing its breakthroughs as highly impactful in solving human-related problems across health, nutrition, technology, and the economy.
Speaking as guest lecturer at the university’s 18th Convocation Lecture, Dr. Olusi described LAUTECH’s research initiatives as practical and impactful, noting that the institution is producing innovations capable of addressing real-life challenges. He highlighted functional food solutions developed by the university that could help tackle health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory diseases.
He said the exhibition of products during his visit underscored the institution’s commitment to research that delivers tangible solutions. According to him, Nigeria must move beyond being a talent-rich nation to becoming a productivity-driven economy through deliberate investment in technology and innovation.
Delivering a lecture titled “From Talent to Productivity: Organising Tech-Driven Growth for Nigeria’s Economic Transformation,” Olusi stressed the need for the country to harness its vast human capital for sustainable development, noting that despite Nigeria’s population advantage, much of its potential remains underutilised.
The lecture, held at the institution’s Great Hall, attracted members of the academic community, industry stakeholders, students, corps members, and other participants.
Olusi urged tertiary institutions to focus on practical and technical solutions to national challenges, emphasising that empowering youths through innovation is key to economic growth. He also expressed concern over the limited global competitiveness of Nigerian products, calling for increased production capacity and scalability.
Addressing graduating students, he encouraged them to become job creators rather than job seekers, urging them to prioritise solving real-world problems, focus on production over profit, and apply technology, knowledge, and integrity in their endeavours.
He noted that the technologies required to advance Nigeria’s economic aspirations are already available, adding that the challenge lies in effectively leveraging them to tackle long-standing issues across key sectors such as food production, food security, manufacturing, and job creation.
On the role of the Bank of Industry in driving technological advancement, Olusi disclosed ongoing efforts to strengthen its digital capacity through an online platform to improve service delivery, alongside providing targeted financing to innovative enterprises in agriculture, manufacturing, and sustainability.
He commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rasaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu, as well as the institution’s management, staff, and students for fostering a culture of innovation.
